Can Heart Attack Symptoms Last for Days?
September 9, 2023 | by Sravani Pathakamuri | Posted in FAQ's
Heart attack symptoms can vary from person to person, and they can sometimes develop gradually over several days. While the classic image of a heart attack involves sudden, intense chest pain, some individuals may experience milder or atypical symptoms that come and go. These symptoms may include:
- Chest discomfort or pain: This can range from mild to severe and may feel like pressure, fullness, squeezing, or burning. It might come and go over several days.
- Shortness of breath: You may experience difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, especially with exertion or while resting.
- Discomfort in other areas: Pain, discomfort, or numbness may radiate to the arms (usually the left), neck, jaw, shoulder, or back.
- Fatigue: Unexplained fatigue or weakness can be a symptom.
- Nausea or indigestion: Some people may mistake heart attack symptoms for stomach-related issues, such as nausea, vomiting, or indigestion.
- Cold sweats: Profuse sweating without apparent cause.
It’s crucial to understand that not everyone experiences the same set of symptoms, and some may have symptoms that are less dramatic or intense. Additionally, some individuals, especially women, diabetics, or older adults, may have atypical or subtle symptoms.
If you suspect you or someone else is having a heart attack, it’s essential to seek medical attention immediately by calling emergency services (e.g., 911 in the United States). Early intervention can significantly improve the chances of a positive outcome. Do not ignore persistent or unusual symptoms, even if they come and go over a period of days, as it’s better to be safe and have a healthcare professional assess the situation.
