What are the Home Remedies for Cancer Sores?

Canker sores, also known as aphthous ulcers, can be painful and uncomfortable. While they typically heal on their own within a week or two, there are several home remedies you can try to alleviate symptoms and promote healing:
- Saltwater rinse: Rinse your mouth with a solution of warm water and salt several times a day. This can help reduce inflammation and promote healing.
- Baking soda rinse: Mix baking soda with warm water to create a mouth rinse. Swish the solution around in your mouth for a minute or two before spitting it out. Baking soda can help neutralize acidity in the mouth and soothe the sore.
- Honey: Dab a small amount of honey directly onto the canker sore a few times a day. Honey has natural antibacterial properties and may help speed up the healing process.
- Coconut oil: Apply coconut oil directly to the sore. Coconut oil has antimicrobial properties and can help soothe irritation.
- Aloe vera: Apply pure aloe vera gel to the canker sore several times a day. Aloe vera has anti-inflammatory properties and can help relieve pain and promote healing.
- Avoid spicy and acidic foods: Spicy and acidic foods can irritate canker sores and make them more painful. Try to avoid these foods until the sore heals.
- Over-the-counter treatments: Over-the-counter products like topical gels or patches containing benzocaine or lidocaine can provide temporary pain relief. Follow the instructions on the product label.
- Vitamin supplements: Some research suggests that vitamin B12, zinc, and iron supplements may help reduce the frequency and severity of canker sores in some individuals. Consult your healthcare provider before starting any new supplements.
- Stress reduction: Stress and fatigue can trigger or exacerbate canker sores. Practice stress-reduction techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or yoga to help prevent future outbreaks.
- Soft, bland diet: Stick to soft, bland foods that are easy to chew and swallow while you have a canker sore. Avoid sharp or crunchy foods that may irritate the sore further.
If your canker sore is large, lasts longer than two weeks, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as fever or swollen lymph nodes, it’s important to see a healthcare professional for evaluation and treatment.
