What are the Home Remedies for Clogged Ears?
February 13, 2024 | by Sravani Pathakamuri | Posted in FAQ's
Clogged ears can occur due to various reasons, such as earwax buildup, sinus congestion, or changes in air pressure. Here are some home remedies that may help alleviate clogged ears:
- Warm Compress: Applying a warm compress to the affected ear can help soothe discomfort and loosen earwax. Soak a clean washcloth in warm water, wring out the excess water, and hold it against the ear for 5-10 minutes. Repeat as needed.
- Olive Oil or Mineral Oil: Using olive oil or mineral oil can help soften earwax, making it easier to remove. Lie on your side and gently pour a few drops of warm olive oil or mineral oil into the clogged ear. Allow it to sit for a few minutes, then tilt your head to let the oil drain out. Repeat this process twice daily for a few days.
- Hydrogen Peroxide: Hydrogen peroxide can help dissolve earwax and clear clogged ears. Mix equal parts of water and hydrogen peroxide, then tilt your head to the side and gently pour a few drops into the affected ear. Let it sit for a few minutes, then tilt your head to drain the solution out. Repeat as needed.
- Steam Inhalation: Steam inhalation can help relieve congestion and open up the Eustachian tubes, which can help unclog ears. Boil water in a pot, remove it from the heat, and lean over the pot with a towel draped over your head to trap the steam. Inhale the steam for 5-10 minutes.
- Chewing or Yawning: Chewing gum or yawning can help relieve pressure in the ears and open up the Eustachian tubes, which can help unclog ears.
- Nasal Decongestants: Over-the-counter nasal decongestant sprays or oral decongestants may help relieve sinus congestion, which can contribute to clogged ears. Follow the package instructions carefully and avoid using nasal decongestants for more than a few days, as they can cause rebound congestion.
- Warm Water Rinse: If the clogged ear is due to earwax buildup, rinsing the ear with warm water may help dislodge the wax. Use a bulb syringe filled with warm water and gently squirt it into the ear canal. Tilt your head to let the water drain out, then dry the outer ear with a clean towel.
- Avoid Using Cotton Swabs: Avoid using cotton swabs or other objects to try to remove earwax, as this can push the wax further into the ear canal and worsen the clog.
If home remedies do not provide relief or if you experience severe pain, hearing loss, or drainage from the ear, it’s important to seek medical attention from a healthcare professional. They can determine the underlying cause of the clogged ear and recommend appropriate treatment.
