What are the Home Remedies for Keloids?
February 16, 2024 | by Sravani Pathakamuri | Posted in FAQ's
Keloids are raised overgrowths of scar tissue that can develop at the site of a healed skin injury. While there is no guaranteed way to completely remove keloids with home remedies, some natural remedies and self-care techniques may help reduce their size and appearance or alleviate symptoms. Here are some home remedies for keloids:
- Silicone Gel or Sheets: Silicone gel or sheets are commonly used to help flatten and soften keloid scars. Apply silicone gel directly to the keloid or use silicone sheets as directed by the manufacturer. Consistent use over several weeks or months may help improve the appearance of the keloid.
- Onion Extract: Onion extract has been shown to inhibit the growth of abnormal scar tissue and reduce inflammation. You can apply onion extract gel or cream to the keloid several times a day. Alternatively, you can create a paste by blending onion and applying it to the keloid for 10-15 minutes before rinsing off.
- Lemon Juice: Lemon juice contains natural bleaching properties that may help lighten the color of keloid scars. Apply freshly squeezed lemon juice to the keloid using a cotton ball, leave it on for 10-15 minutes, then rinse off with water. Be cautious if you have sensitive skin, as lemon juice may cause irritation.
- Aloe Vera: Aloe vera gel is known for its soothing and healing properties. Apply pure aloe vera gel to the keloid several times a day to help moisturize the skin and reduce inflammation. Aloe vera may also help improve the texture and appearance of keloid scars over time.
- Tea Tree Oil: Tea tree oil has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties that may help reduce the size and redness of keloids. Dilute tea tree oil with a carrier oil like coconut oil or olive oil, then apply it to the keloid using a cotton swab. Repeat this process twice daily.
- Honey: Honey has natural antibacterial and wound-healing properties that may help improve the appearance of keloid scars. Apply raw honey to the keloid and leave it on for 15-20 minutes before rinsing off with warm water. Repeat this process daily.
- Massage Therapy: Massaging the keloid scar with gentle pressure can help break down excess collagen and improve blood circulation, which may help soften the scar tissue over time. Use a moisturizing oil or cream to lubricate the skin and prevent friction during massage.
- Vitamin E Oil: Vitamin E oil is believed to promote skin healing and reduce the appearance of scars. Apply vitamin E oil directly to the keloid scar and massage it into the skin twice daily. Alternatively, you can puncture a vitamin E capsule and apply the oil directly to the keloid.
- Apple Cider Vinegar: Apple cider vinegar has astringent properties that may help reduce the size and appearance of keloid scars. Dilute apple cider vinegar with equal parts water, then apply it to the keloid using a cotton ball. Leave it on for 10-15 minutes before rinsing off with water. Repeat this process daily.
- Protect from Sun Exposure: Sun exposure can worsen the appearance of keloid scars by causing them to darken and become more prominent. Protect the keloid scar from sun exposure by covering it with clothing or applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher before going outside.
While these home remedies may help improve the appearance of keloid scars for some individuals, results can vary, and it’s essential to consult with a healthcare professional or dermatologist before trying any new treatment. Additionally, if the keloid scar is causing discomfort, itching, or pain, or if it continues to grow despite home remedies, seek medical advice for appropriate evaluation and treatment options.
