What are the Signs and Symptoms of Ebola Virus?

Ebola virus disease (EVD), caused by the Ebola virus, is a severe and often fatal illness. The symptoms of Ebola can range from mild to severe, and they typically appear 2 to 21 days after exposure to the virus. Common signs and symptoms of Ebola may include:

  1. Fever:
    • Sudden onset of high fever, often accompanied by chills and shivering.
  2. Severe Headache:
    • Intense and persistent headache.
  3. Muscle and Joint Pain:
    • Severe muscle and joint aches, often described as being similar to arthritis pain.
  4. Fatigue:
    • Profound fatigue, weakness, and general malaise.
  5. Sore Throat and Difficulty Swallowing:
    • Sore throat, difficulty swallowing, and pain in the throat.
  6. Chest Pain:
    • Chest pain or discomfort.
  7. Gastrointestinal Symptoms:
    • Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea may occur, sometimes accompanied by abdominal pain.
  8. Rash:
    • Maculopapular rash (a raised, blotchy red rash), which may occur around 5 to 7 days into the illness.
  9. Bleeding:
    • Bleeding, including internal bleeding, may occur in more severe cases. This can manifest as blood in stools, urine, or vomit; bleeding from the gums, nose, or eyes; and easy bruising.
  10. Breathing Difficulties:
    • Shortness of breath and difficulty breathing.
  11. Impaired Kidney and Liver Function:
    • Decreased kidney and liver function, which may lead to abnormal blood tests.
  12. Impaired Mental Function:
    • Confusion, agitation, delirium, and other altered mental states.

It’s important to note that not everyone with Ebola will experience all of these symptoms, and some individuals may have only a few symptoms. Additionally, symptoms of Ebola can overlap with those of other common illnesses, making diagnosis challenging without proper testing.

If you suspect you’ve been exposed to Ebola or are experiencing symptoms consistent with the virus, seek medical care immediately. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for managing the illness and preventing its spread. Avoid direct contact with body fluids of a person showing Ebola symptoms, and follow infection prevention and control measures.
