What are the Symptoms of Blocked Heart Arteries?
October 2, 2023 | by Sravani Pathakamuri | Posted in FAQ's
Blocked or narrowed heart arteries, a condition known as coronary artery disease (CAD) or atherosclerosis, can manifest with a range of symptoms. These symptoms are often indicative of reduced blood flow to the heart muscle. Common symptoms of blocked heart arteries include:
- Chest Pain or Angina:
- A feeling of discomfort, pressure, tightness, or pain in the chest, often described as “angina.”
- Angina can be triggered by physical exertion, emotional stress, or after a heavy meal.
- Shortness of Breath (Dyspnea):
- Breathlessness, especially during physical activity or exertion.
- Difficulty catching your breath or a sensation of suffocation.
- Fatigue and Weakness:
- Generalized tiredness, lack of energy, and a feeling of overall weakness.
- Heartburn or Indigestion-Like Symptoms:
- Some people may experience symptoms resembling indigestion, including bloating, nausea, or discomfort in the upper abdomen.
- Pain Radiating to Other Areas:
- Pain may radiate from the chest to the arms (usually left arm), neck, jaw, back, or shoulder blades.
- Sweating:
- Excessive sweating, often accompanied by chest pain or discomfort.
- Irregular Heartbeat (Arrhythmia):
- Abnormal heart rhythms, palpitations, or a feeling that the heart is racing or fluttering.
- Dizziness or Light-headedness:
- Feeling unsteady, dizzy, or lightheaded, especially during physical exertion.
- Silent Ischemia:
- Some individuals, particularly older adults or people with diabetes, may experience minimal or no symptoms despite having significant blockages in their heart arteries. This is known as silent ischemia.
It’s essential to note that symptoms can vary from person to person, and some individuals may not experience any symptoms at all, especially in the early stages of coronary artery disease. If you suspect heart-related issues or experience symptoms that might indicate blocked heart arteries, it’s crucial to seek medical attention promptly for a thorough evaluation and appropriate testing.
