What is the Cause of Itching in Vagina?
March 28, 2024 | by Yashaswi Pathakamuri | Posted in FAQ's
Itching in the vaginal area, also known as vaginal itching or vulvar itching, can be caused by various factors, including:
- Yeast infection (vaginal candidiasis): A common cause of vaginal itching, yeast infections occur when there is an overgrowth of Candida, a type of fungus normally present in the vagina. Symptoms may include itching, burning, redness, swelling, and a thick, white, odorless vaginal discharge.
- Bacterial vaginosis: Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is an imbalance of bacteria in the vagina, resulting in symptoms such as vaginal itching, abnormal vaginal discharge (often grayish-white and fishy-smelling), and irritation. BV is not a sexually transmitted infection but can be triggered by factors such as douching, antibiotic use, or hormonal changes.
- Trichomoniasis: Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis. It can cause vaginal itching, irritation, and a frothy, foul-smelling vaginal discharge. Other symptoms may include discomfort during urination and sexual intercourse.
- Contact dermatitis: Irritation or allergic reaction to certain substances, such as soaps, perfumes, laundry detergents, scented toilet paper, feminine hygiene products, or latex condoms, can cause vaginal itching and irritation.
- Chemical irritants: Harsh chemicals, such as those found in bubble baths, bath oils, or personal lubricants, can irritate the delicate skin of the vulva and cause itching.
- Skin conditions: Certain skin conditions, such as eczema, psoriasis, or lichen sclerosus, can affect the vulvar area and cause itching, redness, and inflammation.
- Hormonal changes: Fluctuations in hormone levels, such as those occurring during pregnancy, menopause, or the menstrual cycle, can lead to vaginal dryness, irritation, and itching.
- Sexually transmitted infections (STIs): In addition to trichomoniasis, other STIs such as genital herpes, genital warts (caused by human papillomavirus, HPV), and pubic lice (crabs) can cause vaginal itching, along with other symptoms.
- Poor hygiene: Improper hygiene practices, such as wearing tight-fitting clothing, not changing underwear frequently, or not cleaning the genital area properly, can lead to moisture buildup, irritation, and itching.
It’s important to see a healthcare provider for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment if you experience persistent or severe vaginal itching, particularly if it is accompanied by other symptoms such as abnormal vaginal discharge, pain, or discomfort. Avoiding potential irritants, practicing good hygiene, wearing breathable cotton underwear, and avoiding douching can help prevent vaginal itching and maintain vaginal health.
