Peas- Health Benefits

Peas are scientifically known as Pisum sativum. They are commonly small spherical seed or the seed-pod. Botanically peas are called fruit because its seeds develop from ovary. Each pod contains several peas, which can be green or yellow. The name is also used to describe other edible seeds from the Fabaceae family such as the pigeon pea, the cowpea and the seeds from several species of Lathyrus.
They belongs to leguminosae family, which consists of plants that produce pods with seeds inside. Lentils, chickpeas, beans and peanuts are also legumes. However, green peas are commonly cooked and sold as a vegetable. You can buy them in frozen, fresh or canned varieties.
Nutrition
Green peas are a popular vegetable. They are very nutritious and also contain fiber and antioxidants. Peas are a good source of dietary fiber, Vitamin A, iron, folate, thiamin, Vitamin C and manganese, Vitamin K. Research shows they may help protect against some chronic illnesses, such as heart disease and cancer.
Green peas are high in complex carbs called starches like potato, corn etc. Green peas are one of the best plant-based sources of protein. Peas are unique from other vegetables in their high protein content. They are also rich in polyphenol antioxidants, which are likely responsible for many of their health benefits.
Eating adequate amounts of protein and fiber may reduce the number of calories become they reduce satiety by keeping your stomach feeling full.
It plays an important role in weight loss and maintenance because peas are rich in protein which helps in promoting muscle strength and bone health.
Like other legumes, green peas may cause bloating, an uncomfortable swelling of the stomach often accompanied by gas and flatulence. So that, soaking, fermenting or sprouting, may help reduce the lectin content of green peas, making them easier to digest.
