Does Wearing Helmet Cause Hair Fall?
September 29, 2023 | by Yashaswi Pathakamuri | Posted in FAQ's
Wearing a helmet, when properly fitted and clean, should not directly cause hair fall or hair loss. Helmets are designed to protect your head and scalp, and they do not inherently lead to hair loss. However, there are some factors associated with helmet use that might indirectly contribute to hair-related issues:
- Friction: The pressure and friction from wearing a helmet can sometimes lead to hair breakage, especially if the helmet is too tight or if there are rough or abrasive surfaces inside the helmet. To minimize this, it’s important to ensure that your helmet fits correctly and comfortably. Make sure it’s not too tight, and consider using a helmet liner or cap to reduce friction.
- Sweat and Moisture: Helmets can trap heat and moisture, creating a humid environment on your scalp. Excessive sweat and moisture can potentially lead to scalp conditions, such as fungal infections or dandruff, which might indirectly affect hair health. To address this, maintain good hygiene by washing your hair regularly and cleaning your helmet’s padding.
- Traction Alopecia: This is a type of hair loss that can occur when there’s prolonged tension or pulling on the hair shafts. If your helmet is too tight or if you wear it for extended periods, it could potentially contribute to traction alopecia. To prevent this, make sure your helmet fits comfortably and consider taking short breaks during long rides.
- Dirty Helmets: If your helmet is not kept clean and sanitized, it can harbor bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms that may lead to scalp issues or infections. Regularly clean the interior padding and straps of your helmet to maintain a hygienic environment for your scalp.
It’s important to note that the occasional use of a properly fitted and clean helmet for activities such as cycling or motorcycle riding is unlikely to cause significant hair loss. However, if you notice excessive hair fall or other scalp issues, it’s a good idea to consult a dermatologist or healthcare professional to rule out any underlying causes and receive appropriate guidance on hair and scalp care.
