What Are The Symptoms of Typhoid In Adults?
September 1, 2023 | by Sravani Pathakamuri | Posted in FAQ's
Typhoid fever is a bacterial infection caused by Salmonella typhi, and it can produce a range of symptoms in adults. These symptoms typically develop 6 to 30 days after exposure to the bacteria. Common symptoms of typhoid fever in adults include:
- Fever: A sustained high fever is a hallmark of typhoid fever. The fever can gradually increase over several days.
- Headache: Severe headaches are common, often due to the fever and overall illness.
- Abdominal Pain: Abdominal pain and discomfort, often in the area around the navel, are typical. This can be accompanied by cramps.
- Weakness and Fatigue: Typhoid fever can cause extreme fatigue and a general feeling of weakness.
- Loss of Appetite: Many people with typhoid fever experience a loss of appetite and a decreased interest in food.
- Constipation or Diarrhea: Some individuals may have diarrhea at the beginning of the illness, followed by constipation or alternating between the two.
- Rose Spots: In some cases, pink, flat, and rose-colored spots may appear on the chest and abdomen.
- Sore Throat: A sore throat and hoarseness can occur.
- Enlarged Spleen and Liver: The spleen and liver may become enlarged, which can be detected during a physical examination.
- Cough: A dry cough can develop in some cases.
- Mental Confusion: In severe cases, typhoid fever can lead to confusion or delirium.
It’s important to note that symptoms can vary in severity from person to person. Some individuals may have mild symptoms, while others can become very ill. If you suspect you or someone you know has typhoid fever, it’s crucial to seek medical attention promptly. Typhoid fever can be a serious and potentially life-threatening illness if not treated promptly with appropriate antibiotics.
In addition to seeking medical care, practicing good hygiene, such as handwashing and avoiding contaminated food and water sources, can help prevent typhoid infection, especially if traveling to areas where the disease is more common. Vaccines are also available to provide some protection against typhoid fever.
