Which Disease is Caused Due to Deficiency of Iodine?

A deficiency of iodine in the diet can lead to a condition known as “iodine deficiency disorder” (IDD). The most well-known and severe manifestation of IDD is goiter, which is the enlargement of the thyroid gland located in the neck. Additionally, iodine deficiency during pregnancy can result in cognitive impairments and developmental issues in the baby, a condition known as cretinism.

To combat iodine deficiency, many countries have implemented iodized salt programs, where salt is fortified with iodine to ensure that people receive an adequate amount of this essential nutrient. This has significantly reduced the prevalence of iodine deficiency and its associated health problems in many parts of the world.
