Which Virus Causes Chickenpox?

Chickenpox is primarily caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), which is a member of the herpesvirus family. It is a highly contagious virus that typically affects children and causes an itchy skin rash with fluid-filled blisters. Once a person has had chickenpox, the virus remains dormant in the body and can later reactivate to cause shingles, a painful rash that usually occurs in adults or people with weakened immune systems.
