What Can Cause Blood Clots?
February 20, 2024 | by Yashaswi Pathakamuri | Posted in FAQ's
Blood clots can be caused by a variety of factors, and they can form in veins or arteries. Here are some common causes and risk factors for blood clots:
- Inactivity or Prolonged Immobility: Long periods of immobility, such as during long flights or bed rest after surgery, can increase the risk of blood clots.
- Surgery or Trauma: Major surgery or traumatic injuries can trigger blood clot formation.
- Certain Medical Conditions: Several medical conditions increase the risk of blood clots, including atrial fibrillation, certain types of cancer, autoimmune disorders, and inflammatory conditions like lupus.
- Genetic Factors: Inherited conditions that affect blood clotting, such as Factor V Leiden mutation or other clotting disorders, can contribute to clot formation.
- Smoking: Tobacco use increases the risk of blood clots by damaging blood vessels and promoting clotting.
- Hormonal Changes: Hormonal contraceptives (birth control pills, patches, or rings) and hormone replacement therapy can elevate the risk of blood clots, particularly in women.
- Pregnancy: Pregnant women are at an increased risk of blood clots due to changes in blood flow and increased pressure on blood vessels.
- Obesity: Being overweight or obese is a risk factor for blood clot formation.
- Age: The risk of blood clots tends to increase with age.
- Certain Medications: Some medications, such as hormone-based drugs, certain cancer treatments, and certain antipsychotic medications, may increase the risk of blood clots.
- Previous History of Blood Clots: Individuals who have had a previous blood clot are at a higher risk of experiencing another one.
It’s important to note that sometimes blood clots can form without an obvious cause. If you suspect you have a blood clot or are experiencing symptoms such as swelling, pain, or redness in a limb, sudden shortness of breath, or chest pain, seek medical attention promptly, as blood clots can be serious and require immediate treatment.
