Mouth ulcers, also known as canker sores, can be painful and uncomfortable, especially when located on the tongue. While they typically heal on their own within a week or two, there are several home remedies that may help alleviate pain and promote healing:
- Saltwater Rinse: Gargling with a warm saltwater solution can help reduce inflammation and relieve pain associated with mouth ulcers. Dissolve half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and swish it around in your mouth for 30-60 seconds before spitting it out. Repeat this several times a day.
- Honey: Honey has antimicrobial and wound-healing properties that can help promote healing of mouth ulcers. Dab a small amount of raw honey directly onto the ulcer using a clean finger or cotton swab several times a day.
- Coconut Oil: Coconut oil has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties that can help reduce pain and promote healing of mouth ulcers. Swish a tablespoon of coconut oil around in your mouth for a few minutes, then spit it out or swallow it. Repeat this several times a day.
- Aloe Vera Gel: Aloe vera gel has soothing and healing properties that can help reduce pain and inflammation associated with mouth ulcers. Apply a small amount of pure aloe vera gel directly to the ulcer using a clean finger or cotton swab several times a day.
- Licorice Root: Licorice root contains compounds that have been shown to help reduce inflammation and promote healing of mouth ulcers. Chew on a small piece of licorice root or apply licorice root powder directly to the ulcer several times a day.
- Baking Soda Paste: Mix a small amount of baking soda with water to form a paste, then apply the paste directly to the ulcer using a clean finger or cotton swab. Baking soda can help neutralize acidity in the mouth and promote healing of mouth ulcers. Rinse your mouth thoroughly after a few minutes.
- Avoid Irritating Foods: Avoid spicy, acidic, or rough-textured foods that can irritate mouth ulcers and make them more painful. Stick to soft, bland foods that are easy to chew and swallow until the ulcer heals.
- Chamomile Tea: Chamomile tea has anti-inflammatory and soothing properties that can help reduce pain and inflammation associated with mouth ulcers. Drink chamomile tea several times a day or use it as a mouthwash by swishing it around in your mouth for a few minutes before spitting it out.
- Vitamin Supplements: Certain vitamin deficiencies, such as vitamin B12, iron, or folate deficiencies, may contribute to the development of mouth ulcers. Consider taking vitamin supplements or eating foods rich in these nutrients to help promote healing.
- Maintain Oral Hygiene: Brush and floss your teeth gently to prevent further irritation to mouth ulcers. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and avoid abrasive toothpaste or mouthwash that may irritate the ulcer.
If your mouth ulcers persist or worsen despite home remedies, or if you experience severe pain, swelling, or difficulty eating or drinking, consult with a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and treatment. They can recommend medications or further interventions to help alleviate symptoms and promote healing.
