I also explain the difference between them in detailed. Though Both curd and yogurt are dairy products obtained through milk, there is a difference.

We get milk from different sources such as cow, goat, buffalo, yam etc. Basing on the locality, people use milk from different source. Whatever the source, we get yogurt. Curd:

Curd is also popularly known as dahi. It is a dairy product formed by milk coagulating. Curd is also popularly known as dahi. This process is known as curdling. The coagulation can be caused by adding rennet (curdled milk from the stomach of an unweaned calf, containing rennin and used in curdling milk for cheese). You can also add any edible acidic substances like lemon juice or vinegar, and then allowing it to coagulate. If the acidity is increased, it causes the milk proteins to tangle into solid masses, or curds. It takes around 6 to 8 hours for the milk to turn into curd. This is also observed, when milk is fed to your baby. Sometimes, the baby splits of the milk in the curd from. This is because of the presence of rennet in the milk which allows the milk to curdling.

We can also obtain many byproducts by curd, when the curd becomes sour by natural or by adding any citric juice, we get different types of cheese like cottage cheese, paneer and from the leftover water after squeezing the curd known as whey water which are very nutritious and rich source of protein. These are curdled with bacteria and sometimes with rennet.

Yogurt:

Yogurt is also known as yoghurtyogourt or yoghourt. It is produced by fermentation of milk with bacteria. The bacteria used to make yogurt are called as yogurt cultures. The fermentation of milk (lactose) by these bacteria produces lactic acid, which acts on milk protein (whey and casein)  to give good texture and characteristic tart flavor to yogurt. Cow’s milk is most commonly used to make yogurt. The used milk may be homogenized or not. It may be pasteurized or raw. Each type of milk substantially produces different results.

Thus, Yogurt is produced using a culture of Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus bacteria. In addition, other lactobacilli and bifidobacteria are also added sometimes during or after culturing yogurt.

Curd contains Lactobacillus bacterium i.e. Lactic acid bacteria, while yogurt contains yogurt culturs or live strains of both Lactobacillus Bulgaria bacterium and streptococcus thermophilus.

Yogurt can be flavored with your favorite fruit, taste etc. So, this is known as industrial product whereas curd is homemade product. Yogurt is harder than the curd.

Yogurt contains protein, pantothenic acid, potassium and molybdenum which are useful in weight loss, and also reduce blood pressure . Due to presence of healthy gut bacteria, consuming yogurt can improve the digestion and provide good health. Probiotic food can make people to live long. Hence, yogurt can also be taken by people who had allergic problems among lactose products.
