What is the Classification of Minerals in Nutrition?
April 18, 2023 | by Yashaswi Pathakamuri | Posted in FAQ's
Minerals are essential nutrients required by the body in small amounts to maintain various functions and systems. They are classified into two categories based on the amount required by the body:
- Macro minerals: These minerals are required in larger amounts, usually in amounts of 100 mg or more per day. Macro minerals include calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium, potassium, chloride, and sulfur.
- Trace minerals: These minerals are required in smaller amounts, usually in amounts of less than 100 mg per day. Trace minerals include iron, zinc, copper, manganese, iodine, selenium, chromium, molybdenum, and fluoride.
Both macro and trace minerals are important for various functions in the body, such as bone health, nerve function, fluid balance, and enzyme reactions. A balanced diet that includes a variety of whole foods can help ensure adequate intake of these essential minerals.
