Will Metformin Cause Hypoglycemia?

Hypoglycemia

Metformin itself typically does not cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) when used alone. Unlike some other diabetes medications like insulin or sulfonylureas, which can lead to hypoglycemia by directly lowering blood sugar levels, metformin works differently. It primarily decreases glucose production in the liver and increases insulin sensitivity in the body’s tissues, which helps to lower blood sugar levels without significantly increasing the risk of hypoglycemia.

However, hypoglycemia can occur if metformin is used in combination with other medications that lower blood sugar, such as sulfonylureas or insulin. When used in combination therapy, the risk of hypoglycemia may increase due to the additive effect of multiple medications working to lower blood sugar levels. Therefore, it’s important for individuals taking metformin along with other diabetes medications to monitor their blood sugar levels closely and be aware of the signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia.
