Can a Migraine Cause a Stroke?
April 25, 2024 | by Yashaswi Pathakamuri | Posted in FAQ's
Migraines themselves do not directly cause strokes, but there is an association between migraines, particularly those with aura, and an increased risk of ischemic stroke.
Here’s how it works:
- Migraine with Aura: Migraines with aura involve neurological symptoms such as visual disturbances, sensory changes, or speech difficulties that precede or accompany the headache phase. Research has shown that individuals who experience migraines with aura have a slightly higher risk of ischemic stroke compared to those without migraines or those with migraines without aura. The exact reason for this association is not fully understood, but it may be related to changes in blood vessels, increased propensity for blood clotting, or shared risk factors such as genetic predisposition or cardiovascular risk factors.
- Other Risk Factors: It’s important to note that while migraines with aura may be associated with an increased stroke risk, the absolute risk remains low for most individuals. Other risk factors, such as smoking, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and use of hormonal contraceptives, can further increase the risk of stroke in individuals with migraines. Managing these risk factors is crucial in reducing the overall risk of stroke.
- Migraine Treatments: Some medications used to treat migraines, particularly certain types of triptans, may also slightly increase the risk of stroke, especially in individuals with other risk factors for cardiovascular disease. However, the absolute risk of stroke associated with these medications is generally low.
It’s essential for individuals with migraines, especially those with aura, to be aware of their increased stroke risk and to work with their healthcare providers to manage other risk factors and adopt a healthy lifestyle. If you have migraines and are concerned about your stroke risk, it’s important to discuss your individual risk factors and management strategies with your healthcare provider.
