Can a Stomach Infection Cause Acid Reflux?
April 25, 2024 | by Yashaswi Pathakamuri | Posted in FAQ's
Yes, a stomach infection can potentially cause or exacerbate acid reflux symptoms. Acid reflux, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), occurs when stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, causing irritation and discomfort.
Here’s how a stomach infection can contribute to acid reflux:
- Increased Gastric Acid Production: Some stomach infections, such as Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection, can increase gastric acid production or disrupt the balance of stomach acids and protective factors. This excess acid production or imbalance can lead to a greater likelihood of acid reflux symptoms.
- Gastric Inflammation: Stomach infections can cause inflammation of the stomach lining (gastritis), which may impair the normal function of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). The LES is a ring of muscle that acts as a valve between the esophagus and the stomach, helping to prevent stomach acid from refluxing into the esophagus. Inflammation or irritation of the LES can weaken its function, allowing stomach acid to flow back into the esophagus more easily.
- Delayed Gastric Emptying: Certain stomach infections can lead to delayed gastric emptying, meaning that food and stomach contents remain in the stomach for longer periods than usual. Prolonged gastric retention can increase the likelihood of acid reflux episodes, as there’s more time for stomach acid to reflux into the esophagus.
It’s important to note that acid reflux can have various other causes, including dietary factors, lifestyle habits, medications, and underlying medical conditions. Therefore, if you experience persistent or severe acid reflux symptoms, especially if accompanied by other concerning symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, chest pain, or unintended weight loss, it’s essential to seek medical evaluation to determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment. If a stomach infection is suspected as the cause of acid reflux, appropriate treatment of the infection may help alleviate symptoms of reflux.
