What Can Cause an Insulin Reaction?
February 19, 2024 | by Yashaswi Pathakamuri | Posted in FAQ's
An insulin reaction, also known as hypoglycemia or low blood sugar, occurs when the level of glucose (sugar) in the blood drops below the normal range. This can happen for various reasons, and the causes of an insulin reaction may include:
- Excessive insulin dose: Taking too much insulin or other glucose-lowering medications can cause a rapid drop in blood sugar levels.
- Missed or delayed meals: Not eating according to the prescribed meal plan or skipping meals can lead to low blood sugar, especially if someone has taken insulin or other diabetes medications.
- Physical activity: Exercise can lower blood sugar levels, and if insulin doses or food intake are not adjusted accordingly, it may result in hypoglycemia.
- Alcohol consumption: Drinking alcohol, especially on an empty stomach, can lead to low blood sugar levels, as the liver prioritizes processing alcohol over releasing glucose.
- Insulin sensitivity: Changes in insulin sensitivity, such as during illness or stress, can affect how the body responds to insulin and may increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
- Medical conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as adrenal or pituitary gland disorders, can affect hormone production and glucose regulation, potentially leading to low blood sugar.
- Medication interactions: Some medications, when taken in combination with insulin or other glucose-lowering drugs, may increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
- Poorly balanced meals: Consuming meals that are low in carbohydrates or unbalanced can result in insufficient glucose intake, leading to low blood sugar.
- Insulin pump malfunctions: For individuals using insulin pumps, malfunctions or errors
