Will Using Minoxidil Cause Hair Loss?
April 8, 2024 | by Yashaswi Pathakamuri | Posted in FAQ's
Minoxidil, a medication commonly used to treat hair loss, typically does not cause hair loss as a side effect. In fact, minoxidil is known for its ability to promote hair growth and is approved by regulatory agencies like the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) for this purpose.
Minoxidil works by stimulating hair follicles, prolonging the growth phase of the hair cycle, and increasing blood flow to the scalp. As a result, it can help to regrow hair in individuals experiencing certain types of hair loss, such as male and female pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia).
While minoxidil is generally considered safe and effective for most people, it’s important to note that some individuals may experience side effects. Common side effects of minoxidil include scalp irritation, itching, dryness, and flaking. These side effects are usually mild and temporary, and they typically resolve with continued use or by adjusting the dosage or application frequency.
Rarely, some individuals may experience increased hair shedding when they first start using minoxidil. This phenomenon, known as “shedding,” is not actually hair loss but rather the shedding of older, weaker hairs to make way for new, stronger hairs to grow. Shedding typically subsides after a few weeks of continued use, and new hair growth may become noticeable thereafter.
Overall, minoxidil is considered a safe and effective treatment for hair loss for most people. However, as with any medication, it’s essential to follow the instructions provided by your healthcare provider or the product label and to discuss any concerns or potential side effects with a healthcare professional.
